Areas of Expertise
Consulting and representing clients in civil and commercial matters, as well as debt recovery and bankruptcy law, with particular emphasis on the following:
  • Offering advice and support during the negotiation of contracts of all types
  • Advising and representing clients in civil litigation and in national and international arbitral tribunals (tort, contract, inheritance, labour and tenancy disputes, etc.)
  • Advising and representing clients in matters of commercial law, in particular IT projects, outsourcing, public purchases, company acquisitions, delivery, licence and labour contracts, succession regulation, and inheritance contracts
  • Giving comprehensive support in all areas of bankruptcy and probate law, debt recovery and foreclosure law
  • Member of the Board of Directors and Board of Trustees


Professional Activities

  • Member of various commissions and working groups involved with legislative reform (in particular the SFBC (Swiss Federal Banking Commission) Bank Bankruptcy Ordinance, justice reform of the Canton of Bern, and justice reform of the Canton of Solothurn)
  • Lecturer at the University of Fribourg in Rules of Civil Procedure (2008)
  • Member of the Bar Examination Board (1998-2010) and the Examination Board for Notaries of the Canton of Bern (2002-2015)
  • Auditor for the Swiss International Law Association (ILA) (2005-2016)
  • Secretary for the Swiss Conference for University Instructors in the Law of Civil Procedure (2003-2016)
  • Co-editor of the Swiss Journal of the Law of Civil Procedure (SZZP/RSPC)
  • Co-author of a textbook on debt collection and bankruptcy law
  • Member of the editorial staff of the Journal of the Bernese Lawyers Association
  • Member of various associations (SAV, BAV, SJV, BJV, ASA, ASDE, SchKG-Vereinigung)


Education

  • Studied law at the University of Bern, with internship at the Aarwangen District Court, a medium-sized Bernese law firm, and the Superior Court of the Canton of Bern
  • Admitted to the Bar in 1993
  • Scientific assistant at the Institute for International Private and Procedural Law, University of Bern (1993-1997)
  • Postgraduate studies at the Yale Law School and successful completion of the Master of Laws (LL.M.) (1997-1998)
  • Senior scientific assistant at the Institute for International Private and Procedural Law at the University of Bern (1998-2001)
  • Doctoral thesis to the Law Faculty of the University of Bern (2001)
  • Freelance work in a medium-sized Bernese law firm (2001-2002)
  • Assistant professor for civil procedural law, debt collection and bankruptcy law at the University of Bern (2002 - 2008)
